Playa del Carmen, in one line
A Caribbean city on the Riviera Maya with warm weather all year, an accessible cost of living by international standards, fiber internet and a huge community of digital nomads and expats. Ideal if you work remotely or want to reset your quality of life.
Why Playa del Carmen?
Tropical weather year-round
Warm temperatures 12 months a year, the Caribbean Sea minutes away and a winter that simply doesn't exist. Forget coats and heating.
International community
One of Mexico's largest concentrations of digital nomads and expats: events, coworks, groups and friendships from day one.
Cost of living vs quality
You live well on a moderate international budget: rent, food and services cost a fraction of the US, Canada or Europe.
Strategic location
Cancún 45 min, Tulum 45 min and a ~2 hr direct flight to Mexico City. International airport nearby for easy in and out.

Internet and remote work
PDC is a solid base for remote work: there is fiber across most of the urban area and a mature coworking infrastructure.
- Speeds: Telmex and Izzi offer fiber up to 300 Mbps; enough for video calls, heavy uploads/downloads and simultaneous streaming.
- Coworks: spaces with business-grade internet, meeting rooms and community — see our picks in the best coworks in PDC.
- Cafes with good wifi: several cafes double as informal offices; check options in recommended restaurants and cafes.
- Nomad community: active Facebook/WhatsApp groups, weekly meetups and networking events all year.
Areas to live by profile
Center / Fifth Avenue
For nomads and tourists extending their stay: everything walkable, nightlife, cafes and coworks. Noisier and pricier, maximum convenience.
Playacar
Families and luxury: gated community, security, beach and golf course. Price detail in residential areas.
Corasol
Investment and premium lifestyle: modern development with private beach and golf, strong appreciation. More in residential areas.
North Zone
Long-term nomads: best price-to-quality ratio, new development, quieter and still close to everything.
Ciudad Mayakoba
Families and new development: modern planning, amenities and green surroundings. A solid option to put down roots.
Safety: the realistic version
Playa del Carmen is, overall, safe to live in within the tourist zone — which is where most nomads and expats live. It is not a perfect bubble: apply the same common sense as in any city.
- Fifth Avenue, the beaches and residential developments are generally safe day and night.
- At night, avoid poorly lit peripheral areas away from the tourist corridor if you don't know them.
- Don't flash valuables, use ATMs inside banks or malls, and prefer DiDi/known transport late at night.
- Stay informed locally: expat groups share alerts and neighborhood recommendations in real time.
Basic paperwork for foreigners
- Tourist visa: on entry you get up to 180 days automatically. Enough to test the city before committing.
- Temporary residency: requires processing with the INM (usually started at a Mexican consulate abroad). Allows long stays and renewal.
- Permanent residency: can be requested after 4 years of temporary residency (or via other grounds such as family ties).
- RFC and bank account: with residency you can get an RFC tax ID and open a Mexican bank account — useful for rentals, utilities and investing.
