Moving to PDC: Notes from a Resident

The first month you go every day. The second, three times a week. By the end of the year, maybe on Sundays if you have nothing pending.

Not because it loses its magic. But because PDC becomes your city, not your resort. And in your city you have meetings, errands, the car at the shop and the WiFi that went down right when you had an important call.

The difference is that when you do go — even on a random Tuesday afternoon — the sea is still the same. And that's worth more than you thought.

PDC has jungle. It has nature. It has a sky that at night, if you get a little away from downtown, still shows stars.

But it also has permanent construction. It has mufflerless motorcycles at 11 at night. It has Avenida 115 at rush hour that looks suspiciously like any avenue in any rapidly growing city.

The trick is that all of that coexists with cenotes 20 minutes away, real jungle 10 minutes away and a sea that remains, objectively, one of the most beautiful in the world.

It's nature mixed with a city under construction. Depending on the day, one or the other wins.

Nobody warns you about the humidity.

It's not the heat — you imagined the heat. It's the Caribbean humidity that makes your clothes take three hours to dry, that makes your laptop start acting strange if you don't have a dehumidifier, that gives your hair a life of its own no matter what you do to it.

Residents of more than a year all have the same face when a newcomer says "what lovely warm weather" — it's the face of someone who knows what's coming.

The good news: you adapt. The body learns. And there are products that help — a good room dehumidifier and an anti-frizz serum in the bathroom are investments that pay for themselves.

Nowhere else on the planet will you mingle with so much human variety in so little space.

The Argentine with three startups in motion, the retired Canadian who arrived "for three months" four years ago, the chilango who fled the stress of Mexico City and works more hours than ever but with a better tan, the life coach who charges in dollars and owes you the change.

All coexisting on the same block, the same café, the same colectivo.

At first it's fascinating. Then it's normal. Then you realize you're also one of the characters in the catalog — and that, curiously, is reassuring.

PDC is no longer cheap. That has to be said plainly.

A decent rental downtown costs between $16,000 and $20,000 MXN a month. Eating well without going overboard — $3,000 to $5,000 MXN monthly. Electricity with air conditioning in summer: it can reach $3,000 MXN and surprise you.

A single person living comfortably needs around $25,000-$30,000 MXN a month (~$1,200-$1,500 USD). It's not Chiang Mai. But it's not Miami either.

The equation that still works is quality of life vs cost. The sea, the climate, the international community, the connectivity and the geographic position — Cancún 45 minutes away, Tulum 45, Mexico City a direct 2-hour flight — you rarely get them all together for that price anywhere else.

You don't stay for the beach. The beach is in many places.

You stay for the people. For the WhatsApp group where someone always knows where there's a good dentist or who's renting an apartment with no commission. For the cowork where you met your next client or partner. For the neighbors who became real friends.

PDC has a community of residents — Mexicans, foreigners, long-term nomads — that is genuinely good. Open, diverse, with many people who chose this place consciously, and it shows in how they relate to one another.

It's what turns "I came on vacation and stayed" into something that makes sense beyond the initial romanticism.

After all of the above — the humidity, the traffic, the costs, the permanent construction — the image you had before arriving wasn't so far off.

The sea is still the same. The sky is still cleaner than in most cities. There's jungle minutes away. There are cenotes that still leave you speechless even after you've seen them twenty times.

The difference is that now you see it as a resident, not a tourist. And it turns out that — being from a place others consider paradise — has its own value you didn't know you'd appreciate so much.
